دأ بإيراد أول لفظ أو جملة من البيت ثم يتبعها إما بشرح غريب اﻷلفاظ، أو تفصيل ما هو مُجمل، أو بيان ما هو مقدَّر، وربما استطرد بإعراب أو إيراد نظير شِعري، وربما أعاد تلخيص البيت أو مقصود الناظم، وهكذا إلى أن يختتم شرح البيت بذكر ما تضمنه من وجوه البلاغة، حتى إذا فرغ من ذلك مهَّد للانتقال إلى البيت التالي. وهكذا احتوى الشرح على فوائد نحوية وصرفية، وأساليب بلاغية، فقد نبه الشارح على نحو أربعين أسلوبًا بلاغيًا في هذه القصيدة.
